The Thomas Henry Museum Thomas Henry (1766-1836), a painter and collector born in Cherbourg, inaugurated this museum in 1835.
As acquisitions commissioner for the Royal Museum, Thomas Henry had assembled an eclectic personal collection of a very high standard that included such works as David's Patroclus or Poussin's Pietà. He bequeathed more than 160 works, including three of his own paintings, to the town of Cherbourg.
The Thomas Henry Museum has a rich collection of works from the 15th to the 19th century and, notably, works by Millet, Guillaume Fouace or the sculptor Armand le Véel. There are drawings, engravings, prints and sculptures from the 18th and 19th centuries. Temporary exhibitions are regularly held at the museum.
Among the two hundred paintings in the Thomas Henry Museum, there is currently a collection of twenty-seven paintings by Jean-François Millet along with drawings, charcoal drawings and prints by the artist.
