Open to all, the library has a section of reference books (for high school students and the general public, around 1,500 volumes) updated by recent editions.

The Science Library is also the seat of the Cherbourg National Academic Society.

Founded in 1755, this intellectual society is one of the oldest in France. It has a vast library, containing a number of rare books.

The entrance is through the Emmanuel Liais Gardens, at 21, rue Bonhomme.

The Herbarium

The Society also possesses a very important Herbarium containing more than 200,000 plant specimens.

These collections were amassed for the most part, by two learned botanists from Cherbourg: Auguste le Jolis and Louis Corbière. The Herbarium, of world renown, contains in particular, precious specimens of seaweed, moss, and mushrooms, and is often consulted by French and foreign specialists.

Founded on the 17th of August, 1852, by three inhabitants of Cherbourg; Théodore du Moncel, doctor; Emmanuel Liais, astronomer and Auguste le Jolis, botanist, the Society of Science of Cherbourg was State-approved the 26th of August, 1865.

Since 1873, an agreement linked the Municipality of Cherbourg and the Society of Science. At his death in 1900, Emmanuel Liais left his possessions to the Town of Cherbourg with several conditions, including the construction of premises to house the Society’s library.

The building, constructed at 21 rue Bonhomme, bordering the Emmanuel Liais Park, was completed in 1909.
