These tours offered to you by the Town of Cherbourg-Octeville are animated by experienced guides and are free of charge.

 

> The Park and Château of the Ravalet

Let yourself wander the paths of the Ravalet story. Built during the Renaissance, the Château des Ravalet is situated at the heart of a park that stretches across 14 hectares (35 acres), accentuated by ponds and a nineteenth century greenhouse. The entire property is protected as an historical monument.

 

> The Italian Theatre

Constructed at the end of the 19th century and protected

as an historical monument since 1984, the theatre of

Cherbourg is one of the last surviving theatres built in the

Italian style. Come admire the beauty of the golden theatre, as it was nicknamed by the Cherbourgeois in 1882.

 

> Emmanuel Liais Park and Greenhouses

Come discover the hidden treasures of this getaway in the centre of town – the gardens of Emmanuel Liais (former mayor of Cherbourg, astronomer and lover of botany) bring together a surprising variety of plants and exotic trees.

Also worth visiting are the two greenhouses located in the park which hold more that 500 types of rare plants.

 

> Downtown

Walk through the ancient medieval town, marked by the One Hundred Years’ War, and complete your tour by viewing the remnants of the cité walls.

 

> L’Abbaye du Vœu

Visit the old kitchens, the cellar and the chapter house of the Abbey constructed in the twelfth century at the request of Queen Mathilde ; also see priest William’s tomb, which dates back to the thirteenth century.Meeting in front of the main entrance, every Sunday at 2:30 PM.

Walking in parks and gardens

You can visit the splendid parks and gardens open all year round. Come and discover the Liais’ park or the Montebello’s garden, walk in the superb landscape park of the Chateau des Ravalet, or see the feeding of the sea-lion at the public garden.

In the tradition of the French cultural event called the “journées du patrimoine”, you will be allowed to visit sites otherwise closed to the public.
 
Ludiver
Place : FLOTTEMANVILLE-HAGUE/TONNEVILLE
Ludiver is a centre of astronomical discovery open the public.

There is hundred seat planetarium, a professional standard observatory open to the public (telescopes from 300 and 600mm), a museum, a meteorology station and a one hundred seat amphitheatre. A 2,5 hectares landscaped garden offers a place to take a stroll with a panoramic view over the sea.

The French National Holiday
July, 14th
On July 14th 1789 a crowd of French citizens stormed the Bastille, a prison building in Paris that was a symbol of the oppression caused by the royal system.

This day marked the beginning of the French Revolution, and is celebrated all over the country.

 

Festivities usually include national commemoration ceremonies as well as music, fireworks, and dancing in the streets.
