There are two main areas to look out for:

  • The submarine section with “Le Redoutable”- the biggest visitable submarine in the world whose audio-guided visit takes 45 minutes.
  • The ocean section with the largest aquarium in Europe containig 500,000 litres of seawater which develops the scientific angle and the museographic perspective.

This is dedicated to the under standing of the world of submarines via “Le Redoutable” and the exploration and exploitation of underwater resources from a biological, industrial and archeological point of view.

There are also an area providing : a restaurant, bar and snack bar, a take-away counter, the “Cité de la Mer” shop, a shop selling local produce (in high season only), a tourist information point, a post office, free parking.

La Cité de la Mer, or man's conquest of the great depths !

The construction of La Cité de la Mer is partly a new construction and partly a renovation of an original piece of european heritage and historical monument.

This tourist, scientific and cultural complex standing on the site of Cherbourg's famous Gare Maritime Transatlantique (Transatlantic Rail Terminal) will be opening its doors to the general public in the spring of 2002.

The creation of La Cité de la Mer stems from a desire to explain and to share man's underwater adventure, illustrating it through Cherbourg's history, its tradition of building submarines and the scientific epic which forms part of the same story.

Two of the main reasons for the creation of La Cité de la Mer were the decommissioning of the nuclear submarine Le Redoutable, and the need to save the former Gare Maritime Transatlantique, a unique building listed on the Inventaire Supplémentaire des Monuments Historiques in 1989. When completed La Cité de la Mer will comprise two main buildings : La Grande Halle , located in the former train station concourse, and the Permanent Exhibition Pavilion , built above the dry dock where the submarine Le Redoutable is already in place.

La Cité de la Mer will act as a mediator between the general public and the oceanographic sciences, with a clear educational goal: to help people understand the story of man's adventure and research underwater. More than 200,000 visitors are expected annually in the first few years.

List of monuments which are of sufficient historical or artistic interest to warrant preservation. Similar to UK Grade II Listed Building.
