Cherbourg all sails flying

Cherbourg is one of the few French ports able to host the Tall Ships’ Race, because of its unique infrastructure and its previous experience of nautical events. For almost 20 years, Cherbourg has been a key location for more than 50 of the most prestigious sailing events.

2002 : arrival of the “Solitaire du Figaro”

2001 : the “Challenge Mondial Assistance”
 

1986 : port of call for the “Tour de France à la Voile”, port of call for the “Grand Prix Formule 40”

 

1987 : port of call for the Cutty Sark, the “Grand Prix Formule 40”, the Mondial Fun, the “Championnat des multicoques” (multihull championship), the “Tour de France à la Voile”.

As a result of its involvement, Cherbourg was awarded the “Trophée des Sillages de l’Année” by the Fédération des Industries Nautiques.

 

1988 : port of call for the “Tour de France à la Voile”

 

1989 : Cherbourg was instrumental in saving the Tour de France à la Voile and was a port of call for this race every year until its demise in 2002.

 

1990 : “Championnat de la Ligue de Basse-Normandie de Voile”

 

1991 : start of the Solitaire du Figaro (Figaro single-handed), gathering of the “Vieux gréements Normands” (Old Norman Rigs)

 

1992 : gathering of the old rigs at the start of the “Brest 2002”.

 

1993 : First call for the “Open UAP”, one of the most prestigious sailing races. Port of call for The “National Optimist”. Port of call for the “Championnat de France Espoirs de Catamarans”

 

1994 : exhibition of tall ships prior to the start of Armada. Final port of call for the “Starmanche”. Port of call for the “Championnat de France Micro-Multicoques” (micro-multihull)  and The “Championnat de France Universitaire de Voile” (students championship).

 

1995 : gathering of old rigs, port of call for the second time for the “Open UAP”, the “Internationaux de France Laser”, the “National First 210”.

 

1996 : port of call of the EDHEC cruising-race (EDHEC is one of the best business schools in France), “Challenge Européen des Entreprises” and “Starmanche”.

 

1997 : start of the “Course de l’Europe”, the “National Optimist”

 

1998 : start of the “Solitaire du Figaro”

Port of call for the “Régate nationale Europe”, “Championnat de France d’Aviron de Mer”

 

1999 : port of call for the “Trophée des Marins”, the “Coupe du Monde de Voile des Etudiants” (students world cup), the “Championnat d’Europe First Class 8”

 

2000 : arrival of the Solitaire du Figaro

 

2001 : start of the “Challenge Mondial Assistance”, multihull race organised by Gérard Petipas who created the Jacques Vabre Transat and chose Cherbourg for the first Challenge Mondial Assistance.

 

2002 : arrival of the “Solitaire du Figaro” for the 4th time

 

2003 : start of the second “Challenge Mondial Assistance”

 

2004 : first call in France for The Queen Mary 2.
