The Surcouf Memorial
Unveiled by General de Gaulle in 1951, the war memorial at the end of the small jetty was raised in memory of the 130 sailors who died in the wreck of the Surcouf submarine.

This vessel was sunk in February 1942 in the Pacific Ocean and had been built in Cherbourg. It was launched in 1934. The powerfully armed vessel was fitted with a two-seater seaplane housed in a waterproof cylinder on the keel.

After the 1940 defeat, the Free French Naval Forces requisitioned it in Portsmouth.

On its way to defend Tahiti from the Japanese, the Surcouf was approached by an American cargo ship on the night of February 18, 1942.

The submarine sank. There were no survivors.
