The public gardens The public gardens were opened in 1887. Located at the foot of the Montagne du Roule, they cover 1.7 hectares. Two corner pavilions were added in 1889.
The zoological section of the gardens contains a pond fed by a spring flowing down from the Montagne du Roule. Ducks and Cascaroba swans live there. Nearby, a pool houses one sea lion.
Other animals can be seen in the main aviary and the pound.
In 1892, a bust of Jean-François Millet adorned with decorative figures was unveiled in the gardens.
The portal of the Abbaye du Voeu, found in 1892, is also on display there.
Opposite the Avenue de Paris entrance, a memorial to the people of Cherbourg who gave their lives for France was inaugurated in 1924.
The bandstand, surrounded by a large children's play area, is the only one remaining in Cherbourg.
